Re: The Board Game Thread
Queen = Dame (means Lady)
There's always a grey area here... In both chess and card games, the Queen is sometimes refered to as Dame (which does indeed mean Lady), but equally often as Koningin (which is a direct translation of Queen) and Vrouw (which means little more than Woman). And while we're on the subject of card games, the King is equally often called Koning (which is a direct translation of King) and Heer (which means Lord). I've never heard anybody call a chess King 'Heer' though...

And I still a bit dizzy with the Queen, as no queen took sword in a battle and stronger than her husband

Re: The Board Game Thread
I know, it's weird. But the Queen isn't historically correct, in the early days of Chess, the Queen was called the General, which makes more sense.

Re: The Board Game Thread
It originally was an Elephant (or War Elephant)... They later mistook the Elephant's tusks for the Bishop hat.

Horse resemble knight, rock resemble siege tower, peons resemble man at arms.

Re: The Board Game Thread
True.
But in the original form of Chess, the Rook resembles a Chariot.

Oh yes, we could make a K&B based chess set.
♚ = Lord
♛ = Hashashin
♜ = Siege Tower
♝ = Bishop
♞ = Knight
♟ = Peasant

But then the Pawn should definitely be called a Man-at-Arms...

Re: The Board Game Thread
If you want a military unit, I suggest making it Spearman. Men-at-Arms are a bit too valuable for that.

Re: The Board Game Thread
It does indeed. And since one of our subcivs is the Persians, I suppose it's pretty obvious it'll be one of their units.

Re: The Board Game Thread
I like shogi, similar to chess but you are able to use your opponents pieces against them. Very interesting. I haven't tried Paisho, but I have tried Go. Go is fun and very difficult to play. I need to try it again though, I forgot how to play a bit.

Re: The Board Game Thread
I find it fascinating, simple rules, but extremely complex to play. It has been described as playing four games of chess at once on the same board.
