Re: The City Thread
Izmir you mean? I don't know much about it, but here's a list of my favourites (even though I've never been to the vast majority):
- London
- Istanbul
- Venice
- Copenhagen
- Osaka
- Melbourne
And if birthplaces are to be included then add Apeldoorn.

Re: The City Thread
No, I mean Smyrna, a multicultural but largely Greek city in Asia Minor destroyed by the Turks in 1922.
Update: I didn't know it was the same place. But it was rebuilt after the Turkish Republic was formed.

I have decided towns, villages etc. are acceptable.
Lofthus, a beautiful Norwegian hamlet in Hardanger. Amazing views of the Hardangerfjord and mountains.

Are you nuts? The city was in Asian Minor, the majority of the people who lived there were Greek, Greece did occupy the city and the area there after WW1 and after getting the green light from it's ''allies'', but TURKS were the ones who destroyed the city, killed almost anyone, and made the rest of the Greeks leave, and come to the eastern Greek islands (I live on one of them).
Paco, do check your sources better, especially when you speak for censored topics like these.

Do you thinks that Greeks are responsible for the fire and the catastrophe? Really?
Re: The City Thread
Oh, sorry, mistake there. It was the Turks destroyed it, I know and it was what I meant to put.
Very sorry, Christos.
It sounds like it was an amazing place, very multicultural and magnificent.

Re: The City Thread
Why would you want to go to Warsaw? It was all destroyed by the Germans and Soviets anyway, I'd much rather go to Krakow...

Re: The City Thread
Warsaw was all rebuilt after WWII. Only few buildings survived the bombing by the Germans.
There is no historic district anymore, after the Cold War. It's not even a 100 years old. The Royal Castle was completely destroyed. (except for a few parts of the ground level.
If you where to go to Poland go to Kraków, it's much more beautiful and it's actually original.

Re: The City Thread
Smyrna is just the Greek name for Izmir...
Smyrna - Smyr - Zmir - Izmir
Constantinople - Constanple - Istanple - Istanbul
Caesarea - Caesari - Kayseri
Antioch - Antak - Antakya
Adrianople - Adriane - Edirne
They're all Turkified names.

Sunda Kelapa - Jayakarta - Batavia - Jakarta....
Btw, why Poland's capital is in Warsaw, not Krakow then?

Re: The City Thread
Because Warsaw had been Poland's capital for centuries, and because the Poles wanted to show the Nazis and Soviets that no matter how badly they destroyed Warsaw, the Poles would always rebuild it. In two words: National Pride.
