Re: Friday Updates
The original word is indeed from Greek origin, and used for basically all the peoples living in mainland Europe at the time. In our timeframe however the word was mainly used for 'empires of old', or previously important people (including non-barbaric nations such as Persia).
This is also more or less the guideline we used for Barbarians in K&B. They do not have to be barbaric, but they have to be fallen or declined empires from before our timeframe, or relatively early in it. This is much easier for European Barbarians (Franks, Saxons, things like that) than for Middle Eastern Barbarians (Persians, Jews), so some Middle Eastern Barbarians only sort of half fit the description.

Re: Friday Updates
So, been 2 weeks since we heard anything new. What is up with that?

Re: Friday Updates
Really? Well, I suppose that's my fault then, for not putting General's showcases through. I'll fix it.

Re: Friday Updates
It's Friday Night (for some of us), and you know what that means -- that I forgot to post the Friday update earlier. Not to fear, today we have a glimpse of a unit from the Avar sub-civilization, the Kutrigur Archer.
Hidden away in the K&B forums there's an exciting sign of things to come: testing. The testing is.. surprisingly thorough. Below, a conversation from last week.

...PS: I found another bug, when you play as the Italians, the Archery Range is named "Merchant Ship".
I'm looking forward to next Friday's update. Quite possibly my favorite unit (and yours?) to date will be unveiled in just a week. Plus, a bit of gameplay information.Coder wrote:
I actually put my bug in there myself to make sure people where looking for these things.

Re: Friday Updates
thank you very much. What actually makes this guy special. It says that he has better accuracy, but what does that translate to gameplay wise?

Re: Friday Updates
Better accuracy means a higher attack. The Kurtigur Archer has got a good amount of hitpoints and attack, but they're less superior in their range.

Re: Friday Updates
Heh, good showcase, I like how that archer looks.
Also, if you've ever read our Wotta's bugs you'd be all like WTF?

Re: Friday Updates
I really like how those Paviches look. Also, I couldn't figure out how to damage your own units, interesting...

Re: Friday Updates
Cool, but will it deal increased damage to buildings?

Re: Friday Updates
Probably, but the Archer will have decreased speed and attack in order to balance it.

Re: Friday Updates
That and the fact it damages your own units if they're close enough to the arrow volley more or less makes balanced.

"Imagine a flock of horses zooming toward you, and you're staring helplessly upward, knowing you can't hit the rider before his long polearm impales you first. If you survive the horse dash..."
On show today are a number of new formations that will feature in the Knights and Barbarians Prologue. These include, but are not limited to, a Spear Wall formation for infantry, a Wedge formation for cavalry and a Fire Arrows formation for Archers. New formations are more than just aesthetically pleasing, they also have different strenghts and weaknesses that make them well worth considering to every strategist.
Progress on Knights and Barbarians is quite literally 'booming'. Random Maps are being made at a pace beyond belief, and coding isn't far behind. As always, we make no promises, but do expect to hear more about a future release date soon! Until then, we'll try our best to keep you pleased with Friday Updates.
