Well, a charge bonus would be much like trampling anyway, except it would come with a speed bonus and only go on for a limited time.

Spears will devastate cavalry formations anyway. Knights may be able to get some men through, but the vast majority would still be defeated. Otherwise cavalry would indeed easily become overpowered, and there would me little need to use any other units. Short countering circle then: Cavalry beat Archers, Spearmen beat Cavalry, Archers beat Spearmen. Of course the full counter system would include swordsmen, artillery and such, but I just left that out of the question.

I would suggest a new counter system but i don't have any ideas on how it would work.

or rather, if we give the cavalry a charge bonus, not a large one, so it wouldn't affect the gameplay as much as we think at the moment
