Furthermore, they were the only people in the area that utilized gunpowder to such an extent, so the use of weapons designed to frighten or shock (i.e. explosives, fireworks, flamethrowers) would have been much more effective. None of their nomad enemies really used them, so the shock value would have been enormous.

Soldiers of the Dragon is a good place to start if you feel like reading a book, I had some other sources, but I'll have a hard time finding them again, I'll tell you if I do find them, however...
